Note: updated location information 2/7/24.
Veterans Day comes just once a year, but that doesn’t mean we can’t honor our veterans on the other 364 days. And in fact, we do! We’re committed to serving those who have served our country year-round, and have a team of individuals specifically dedicated to connecting our local veterans with the benefits they’ve earned.
Here are three valuable resources to keep in mind:
Home Loans
Purchasing a home or starting a renovation is a big task to undertake – especially when it comes to cost. For veterans, there’s something called a VA-Guaranteed Loan that can help with that part of the project! Eligible persons for these types of loans generally include:
- Veterans who were discharged since 9/16/40, under other than dishonorable conditions.
- Military personnel on active duty who have served a minimum period.
- Certain reservists and national guard members.
- Surviving spouses of certain deceased veterans.
How to apply:
Determining eligibility is as simple as bringing VA Form 26-1880 to our Veterans Service Office with a copy of DD Form 214 OR record of discharge.
VA Healthcare
From preventive care such as physical exams to ambulatory diagnostic treatment, medication and supplies, and more, the Veterans Health Administration offers a variety of medical, surgical, and rehabilitative care services to its customers. This healthcare is not just for service-connected injuries or medical conditions, and the healthcare facilities cater to both men and women.
How to apply:
For this benefit, one must fill out the Application for Health Benefits and then bring it to our Veterans Service Office with a copy of record of discharge (DD 214 or WD AGO Form 53-55). (Psst – you can also bring it to the VA Medical Center at 1601 Brenner Ave. in Salisbury OR the Charlotte Outpatient Clinic at 8601 University East Drive in Charlotte, but we’re always ready to help in our office!)
Building with Our Veterans
We understand that returning to the workforce after serving can be tough, which is why we, along with Central Piedmont Community College, created the Building With Our Veterans program. Through this program, we recruit and train military veterans with building safety experience and construction skills for jobs as County code officials! After successfully completing one year of field and classroom training, participants could be hired into Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement if positions are available.
How to apply:
You’ll know when we’re accepting applications when you see the “Inspector I Trainee” position listed in our job openings. Veterans are encouraged to let us know about their veteran status in their application.
Reach Out to Our Veterans Service Office
Aside from assisting with the above, we’re here to help with any questions you or a friend/family member might have regarding available benefits. We work for veterans and their families, NOT the VA, and we’ll do everything we can to ensure that our veterans have what they need, whenever they need it. Like we said earlier, we don’t need a holiday to honor them, we do it year-round.
